The inscription reads "Mrs. Anne Smith Cunninghame of Caprington died 1st of March 1830." on the inside. The Scottish origin of the name Cunningham of Caprington along with the prefix "Mrs." tells us this ring was made in loving memory of a beloved Scottish wife. Though the hallmarks show it to be of the Victorian era, this memorial band was made in the Regency style of the earlier part of the century. It is hallmarked for Birmingham, 1863. The words IN MEMORY OF are carved to the outside of the band along with raised religious and mourning imagery including Maltese crosses and fallen leaves. The gold-work is heavily chased. This ring was probably made as an advance order but never inscribed. Possibly it sat in some goldsmith's vault for years, which c...

The Art Deco era ushered in a wave of exotic forms, of which our lizard ring is a superb example. Our 14K ring with an intricately carved reptile planted between 3 gemstones, a larger diamond on one side and a sapphire and smaller diamond on the other, is centered on historicism (as was the Art Deco period); reptiles date from ancient Rome and were a symbol of wedded bliss. The ring is sturdy and solid with its thick band, substantial face and firmly set gemstones. There is a small opening behi...

Our keeper ring once had hallmarks but they are worn off, so we are estimating this ring to be from the late 1890's. Our ring has plaited gold work on the underside, a work of art of itself. A "Keeper" ring is a snug fitting ring worn to prevent the loss of a more valuable ring by keeping the larger ring from sliding off.
Keeper rings were also known as magic, or illusion rings, because of the illusion created by rotating the band causing it to appear to widen, to narrow, then to widen again...

Lovely late Georgian 22 carat gold ring that is hallmarked Birmingham 1833. The ring has a surround of of natural split pearls around a rectangular beautifully enameled border in black that surrounds a plate of crystal which covers the beautiful hair-work within. The shoulders are of a Georgian repousse carved leaf design and appear to be "reaching out" to hold the head of the ring. Pearls were used frequently in mourning jewelry as a representation of tears. A great example of a classic Georgia...

Lovely carved bracelet of polished jet. Jet was a form of fossilized coal that was discovered in the town of Whitby, England in the late 18th century. This gave rise to a cottage industry that employed many in the town of Whitney in the 19th century, as jet formed the material for lightweight striking black jewelry forms which were perfect i to meet the unending demand for mourning jewelry during the Victorian era (owing to Queen Victoria's long extended period of mourning for hur late husband ...

At a time when much of the populace was illiterate, medieval signet rings had a very practical function. They were were used as seals for official purposes such as officiating a covenant or contract, communication of a religious pledge, love tokens, or merely to display a monogram. The images are carved intaglio, as opposed to raised; the introduction of sealing wax in the middle ages made intaglio work more common. The intaglio on this ring shows a pair of (likely) female figures holding, u...
This classic Deco sapphire French cut eternity band, crafted of platinum and rubies, features 26-30 rubies. There is a hallmark inside that reads 10% iridium platinum. The addition of iridium, a hard and rare metal with an extremely high melting point is a good thing, simply means the platinum has an even harder-wearing durability.
The band measures a US/Can. 7 and is NOT size-able.

Original eighteenth century Chelsea Seal in the form of a grotesque figure of a black masked man with 3 cornered ("tri-corn") hat. The tri-cornered hat was a popular hat worn in the 18th century by both aristocracy and commoners, as it was designed to better reveal one's highly fashionable wig. Our male figure is in black breeches, standing on a white base with the motto "Tou jour gay" ("always happy"). "Tou Jour gay" was used often as a motto as were many of the mottos seen on Chelsea Seals (...

The longest watch chain we have ever come across, this authentic Sterling Victorian slinky watch chain has an unusual link. Victorian watch chains were worn by women, as well as men, to hang a watch, which would snap into the end of a long chain and tuck into a pocket or a belt at the waist. (This is why original watch chains were always very long. Shorter watch chains are part of a larger chain that has been cut down to make 2 or 3 necklaces). At 78 inches in length, our chain can be looped ove...

This is a long silver watch chain with alternating lengths of longer and shorter fetter links. For the better part of the nineteenth century, chains were fashioned laboriously using hand-working skills. A fetter link refers to a longer link which was used to reduce the number of links needed to fabricate a chain, thereby cutting down on the labor. The longer links are polished smooth while the shorter links have an interesting texture.
