Advances in the field of astronomy in the 18th century inspiring science, and art and naturally were reflected in the jewelry fashions over time. Bague au firmament, or rings of the heavens, were designed to emulate the night sky with its heavenly stars. Firmament rings originated in France but soon spread to Europe after the later part of the 18th century, as stylish ideas did in those days. This ring is inscribed "Sarah Borg died January 5th 1873 ae (aged) 66. The original crystal locket back is intact, with hair mounted underneath, as was the custom of the day.
