The detail on this fabulous 18K serpent choker astounds. In forty years of buying and selling antique jewelry, we have never seen a necklace like this one, designed with incredible precision and charm. The flexible gold necklace features a serpent's head with ruby round eyes, menacing teeth and ornately carved patterns incised in the underside of the snake's head. The snake has his mouth clamped firmly downward on a finely detailed turtle with polished garnet shell, diamond studded feet and tail. The glass belly of the turtle holds a lock of plaited hair, making this a sentimental jewelry as well. The snake motif embodies eternal love and during Victorian times the wearing of any form of snake jewelry was considered the height of good taste. The chain measures 14 1/2 inches. The turtle adds 1-2 inches to the overall length.
