This is an unusual ring that is a crossover between American Colonial and English Victorian. The ring has as its face an actual $2.50 Liberty coin from 1861 but is wrapped in a polished 18K English mount. Minted from 1840 - 1907, our American Liberty coin ring with the authentic gold USA Gold Quarter Eagle was originally legal tender worth $2.50. This was a substantial amount of money at the time of minting in 1861. The USA Liberty Gold Coin is 90% pure gold and weighs 0.1209 troy ounce. The body of the ring itself is cast in 18 carat gold. The ring is high polished to a mirror finish. The coin is protected by being set down into the ring rather than set on top of the mounting. In addition to Lady Liberty and the eagle, the coin also features stars as well as small ridges around the coin’s rim. Because a very significant part of both the value and the beauty of this ring is in the gold coin, the ring is fully open so the back of the coin, with the impressive eagle, is on full display. The eagle lacks a mint mark, an indication it was minted in Philadelphia, which had no mint marks. The designer was American Christian Gobrecht, who lived from 1785-1844. It is likely that an American living abroad brought the ring to England for mounting. As an aside, this is a very durable ring that can be worn all the time and will not be affected by moisture. A wonderful signet ring for American coin collectors. The ring is a tad under US size 7 and weighs 12 grams.
