Rare Georgian Paste necklace set in silver with a closed back. Paste jewelry is a form of leaded glass made with a now unknown formula that makes it resemble precious gemstones. The Georgians designated different jewelry for formal evening activities and leisure day time activities. This necklace, with the paste stones resembling diamonds, would have been for evening wear. With each paste gemstone mounted perfectly next to its neighbor, and no visible clasps visible in between, this necklace creates a lovely composition, much like the lights on the Riviere in the South of France when viewed from one's yacht in the dark of night. The necklace measures 16 1/2” in length and the stones are approximately 3/8 in diameter at the center and progressively smaller toward the clasp. The necklace has its original clasp and mounts and 48 paste stones.
