Dramatic Victorian pinchbeck top and drop earrings also called day/night earrings. The drops can easily be removed and the tops worn alone. Then the drops can be return for an evenings night on the town. Pinchbeck is an alloy developed by Christopher Pinchbeck in the 18th century. It is a form of brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, mixed in proportions so that it closely resembles gold in appearance. It never tarnishes. In its time it was worn by women when they traveled so as not to put their precious jewels at the risk of being robbed by highwaymen. The earrings measure 2 3/4" long and 7/8" at their widest.
