Antique Pinchbeck necklace with a barrel clasp set with turquoise stones. Pinchbeck, an alloy of copper and zinc, was invented in the early 18th century by Christopher Pinchbeck. It has the appearance of gold and does not tarnish. These qualities were so good that goldsmiths of that day tried to prevent it from being used for jewelry. Lucky for us, they failed.
